A Little More About Me

My name is Shaneen Bruss. I was born in Salisbury, Rhodesia, now known as Harare, Zimbabwe. I am from a very blended family and am the 5th child in a family of 8 children.

My story and walk of life has been overwhelming and challenging to say the very least, as to why I call it a journey through the wilderness. I know that this is a journey that unfortunately many others share.

I hope that in sharing my story, that it gives others hope for a better future as God promises in Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not evil, to give you a future and a hope."

My Story

I was born in the year 1978 to my mother and father. I was my mom's 5th child. My four older siblings are all half-siblings. My mother and father than had another child, a little girl, she is my only full-blood sibling. When I was only a few years old, my parents decided to get divorced. This left me in an awkward position between my Mom and Dad. A lot of the blame was placed on us kids. A while after the divorce my mom remarried a man who had two kids which brought the sibling numbers to a grand total of 8.

My childhood was nothing short of challenging and traumatic. From being a victim of neglect, molestation, and abuse, not to mention that political and social challenges that came from living in a third-world African country. Unfortunately, my story is not the only one that follows this storyline. The pain, confusion, anger, frustration and challenges that a life like this tends to set you up for makes it hard to navigate when you don't have support. It seemed like my life never stopped being painful and challenging. I felt like I was used and unworthy by My family, My friends, Men, the list can go on. Hurt seemed to come from every direction. I have a story that seemed to have no out. But I learnt that I had a saving grace. That was God.

God blessed me by placing the most incredible woman on my path as our maid, Louise. Louise, a woman who became mother-like to me and loved me like her own, used to take me to church and she showed me the realness of God. It shook my world and drew me into relationship with God. Now, this wasn't the magic pill that made my life better, but God became my rock and helped me navigate my circumstances, find healing, security, freedom and forgiveness as i grew to know Him and develop a relationship with Him. He healed me in only a way that He can and lifted the burdens and shame that I felt on my shoulders. I learned about His truths, some I learned quicker than others.

I got married to Colin in my early 20's and had two children, Nicole and Nathan. A few years after Nathan's birth, God opened opportunity for my family of 4 to immigrate to Australia. This move was beyond challenging, moving to an unknown country with no family or friends, no money. We had to start from scratch. The journey of building our lives in Australia and creating a future for our children was a difficult one.

At age 40, I felt God put this stirring in my heart to begin writing. I thought for sure that it was an intrusive thought, there is no way that God would choose a lower-educated immigrant caucasian woman to write a book. I thought "what difference would someone like me make?". But God kept this stirring in my heart and over the period of 7 years I began to write this book. I felt God showing me a parallel between Jesus' 40 days in the wilderness and 40 years of life being in a wilderness. But in both stories, God is the victor. God has been my victor.

My desire is to share my story and the way that God gave me a prosperous plan and future despite the cards life dealt me. God makes something out of nothing. He brought me out of darkness and gave me hope. My prayer is that others can find the same healing that I have.
